How to Read Data in SPSS Statistical Software

Data that is within SPSS software can be either entered directly or it can be imported from various sources. This could require you to have the ability to read data that is stored in SPSS data files, spreadsheet applications such as Excel, database applications such as Access and text files.

Instructions

Difficulty: Moderate
Step1
Read an SPSS data file. Choose your file and from the menu click File, Open, Data. Go to tutorial/sample_files folder. Select demo.sav and click Open.
Step2
Read data from spreadsheets. Rather than having to type all of your data from Excel into the data editor, you can choose file, open, data. Then select Excel from the drop down list. Select demo.xls and then click open to read this spreadsheet.
Step3
Specify which documents that you want to import. Make sure that Read variable names from the first row of data is selected. Click OK to read the Excel file.
Step4
Read data from a database. The most popular database application is Microsoft Access. Choose File from the menu, open database, new query. Select MS Access database from the list of data sources and click next.

  • SPSS data files are organized by rows and columns.
  • Variables represent each question that is asked in a survey.
