Many people are not familiar with what "netiquette" is. It is network etiquette. In other words, it is a professional code of behavior for electronic communication. Simply put, it is the basic guidelines of how you are supposed to act online.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Remember that on the other side of your message is another person that you are communicating with. There are no non verbal clues for them to follow, so you have to watch for factors that could cause any misinterpretations.

  2. Step 2

Behave ethically. Do this by respecting other people's privacy, do not plagerize and do not read other people's mail or messages. Just be courteous.

  3. Step 3

Look around and get a feel for any discussion or groups that you might consider entering. Do not just jump into any conversation before you observe for a while.

  4. Step 4

Respect other people's time. Whether you are sending a message or an email, it is taking the other person time to read it, so make sure that you reflect that in your message.

  5. Step 5

Give people the benefit of the doubt when it comes to such things as spelling errors or any type of mistakes.

Tips & Warnings
  • Just remember that when you are part of an online community or social group, or even if it is business related, treat people as you would want to be treated.
