Need to hire a car in the USA but don't know where to start? Well here's as good a place as any! Tips on how to go about it and how to stay safe

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Internet Access
  1. Step 1

Open you browser into google and type in car hire USA. Take a look at the "sponsored links" section and select a few companies. Most companies have an online quotation and booking system so you can make notes of prices. Also take a look at comparison sites such as Travel Supermarket and Kelkoo. These order results by price with the very lowest first. Brokers can generally offer lower prices that the car hire companies themselves so it's alwys worth shopping around.

  2. Step 2

Check what's included with your rental, be sure to check the small print to see if you have to pay more for additional drivers, one way fees and find out if ther are any extra insurance or admin/booking costs to pay as these can really bump up the price. Also check out the amendment/cancellation fees, if your flights are changed it could end up costing you!

  3. Step 3

When you travel, make sure you take all of your documentation with you, including booking confirmations and any relevant email communication. When you arrive at the car hire depot. Don't be pressurised into buying any extra insurances if you don't need it! Make sure you are clear on what's already covered in y our car rental package. Also be sure to check the car thoroughly before signing for it. You will also need to check it when you return the vehicle to be sure there is no damage. Take pictures if necessary.

Tips & Warnings
  • Book and extras early as they can be in high demand in peak season
  • Check insurance excesses
  • Check local emergency numbers
  • Be aware of return procedures
  • Don't be taken in by the cheapest 'lead in price'. When booking fees, cc charges and admin fees are added on, this can shoot up
