How to Keep Your Baby Occupied on the Changing Table

When your baby is a newborn, changing their diaper is pretty much easy. They lay on the changing table and let you, Mommy or Daddy, change them.

Once they grow into an infant or toddler, changing their diaper can become trying, and you will need to think of ways to occupy their less than 5 minutes being changed into a clean diaper.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

When your infant and toddler begin needing a diaper change, they will more likely than not lay still on the changing table. More than one time, like me, I am sure you will be asking your infant(s) or toddler(s) to sit still.

  2. Step 2

Along with keeping your infant(s) or toddler(s) still long enough to change their diaper(s), they will be asking for one or more things to hold in their hands while they are getting a fresh diaper.

  3. Step 3

My twins love anything to do with a baby. Anything in their room that has a picture of a baby on it, they must hold otherwise, they go ballistic and make my job that much harder.

  4. Step 4

Here is Twin "A" holding a bottle of lotion with a baby photo on it. If she is not holding a bottle with a baby photo on it, she is usually holding her blanket or pacifier.

  5. Step 5
Twin B holding lotion bottle with baby photo on front

Here is Twin "B" holding a bottle of lotion with a baby photo on it. Just like Twin "A," Twin "B" will also hold her blanket and or pacifier along with the bottle of baby lotion.

  6. Step 6

Changing diapers is something parents will do for a while, beginning with the birth of your baby or babies. Since your babies will be growing, moving and learning to point and talk, we must find something to keep them occupied on the changing table. Otherwise, you and your baby will end up stressed out and not happy campers for what could be an easy diaper change.

Tips & Warnings
  • It is normal to get frustrated when changing your infant's or toddler's diaper because he refuses to let you do your job. This is when you, the parent, need to be creative and keep him occupied for less than 5 minutes.
  • My only warning would be to not let your feathers get ruffled, and do your best to be patient.

on 1/20/2008 Thanks. My 9 months old is starting to be less content while I change her diapers and so I let her hold the clean diaper for me. After a few seconds she gets bored and throws it down, just when I need to put it on her so it works! She's helping :)
