Things You'll Need:

  • Patience
  • Hard Work
  • Pen and Paper
  • Honesty
  1. Step 1

Decide what you naturally have an inclination for. Have you loved animals your entire life? Possibly a veterinarian is your best bet. Do words come easily for you? Then a degree in English will be beneficial for you.

  2. Step 2

Have a practical plan. Many times college is a place to "find yourself". But after college, the rent has to be paid. Make sure that th skills you learn in a particular degree program will be marketable in the workplace after you graduate.

  3. Step 3

Make sure you are making the decision for YOU. If your dad wants you to be an engineer, but you have a flare for the creative, make sure to consider something like fashion or interior design. You have to live with the choice of your career path, not your family or friends.

  4. Step 4

Consider the cost. Will your degree program make you a considerable amount of money when you finish? Is it worth the investment of tuition? For example, if you want an English degree, a state school might do just fine. If you want to be a lawyer, then a private school might be a better bet, and you will have the means to pay the loan back when you start working.

Tips & Warnings
  • Be honest with yourself. Choose the path that will satisfy you, not someone else.
  • Take your time. You have the rest of your life to work!
  • Many times college is used to figure out who you are and what you want to do. If you feel you are not ready to make that decision yet, then do something else. Travel, enter the military, volunteer. Life experience helps self discovery.
