Ever had a Hobo pie? I know what you're thinking: does it involve tins cans and some moldy bread? The answer is no. Hobo pies are a great 3 minute treat that can entertain the little ones and satisfy them for a short while. Oh yeah, adults will enjoy them as well. They are best when made over a campfire.

Instructions

Difficulty: Moderately Easy

Things You’ll Need:

  • heavy duty aluminum foil
  • butter
  • fork
  • bread
  • a heat source(campfire, oven)
  • your favorite pie filling

Step1
Assuming that you have a campfire full of coals ready, start by pulling of a piece of foil about a foot in length. It needs to be big enough for the slice of bread to fit in the center of it and be able to encompass the bread with the edges.
Step2
Place a single slice of bread in the center of the foil. Spread butter thoroughly on surface of bread. Then turn the slice of bread over(butter side down) and place in center of foil. Next, put your favorite pie filling in the center of the bread. Don't use too much or the bread wont seal properly. Now, fold the slice in half encasing the pie filling.
Step3
After that, use a fork to press and seal the outer edges of the slice of bread. Once this is complete, bring the foil up together and then roll the edges together tightly until you reach the bread concealed within the foil. Now, flatten the remaining sides and fold them one half times. Next, you will fold that side one half time again to ensure proper packet sealing. Now you're ready to place on hot coals. Cook on each side for 1 1/2 to 2 minutes. Total cooking time is 3 to 4 minutes. Remove from coals and let cool before eating.

Tips & Warnings

  • Make sure that you cook these on coals and not a blazing campfire.
  • You may need a pair of gloves to retrieve the packets from the coals.
  • Try experimenting with different pie filling. Have fun with it.
  • Use caution not to puncture the foil packets as this will cause the convection process to slow and could burn up the food inside.
  • Packets will be extremely hot right off coals so find a hard wood or metal surface to place them on for cooling. Use gloves to retrieve.
