How to Watch Your Favorite TV Shows Without Commercials Using a DVR

Tired of spending 20 minutes of every hour you watch TV watching commercials rather than the show you want to see? With a little planning and a DVR (digital recording device), you can zip through the commercials and still end the show at the same time, or just watch it another day at your convenience. I use the DVR service offered by my cable company. The small monthly service charge is worth every penny to not watch the same commercials six times a night. Another option is to purchase a DVR and install it at home.

Instructions

Difficulty: Moderately Easy

1. Plan ahead to determine which shows you want to record with the DVR.
2. Follow the instructions on recording a show provided with the DVR to initiate a recording.
3. Do something else for the first 20 minutes of an hour-long show or 10 minutes for a half-hour show. This could be watching another TV show or doing something else like reading a book, exercising or putting the kids to bed.
4. After 10 or 20 minutes, depending on the length of the show (see Step 3), follow the DVR’s instructions to begin viewing the broadcast.
5. Use the fast forward button (sometimes if you hit it multiple times it goes faster) to quickly breeze through the commercial.
6. Continue with Step 5 for each commercial break.
7. By the end of an hour, you will be caught up to the end of the broadcast.

Tips & Warnings

• An alternative method, one that I use when shows are long later in the evening that I really want to stay up, is to just record the whole show and watch it the next day.
• Be careful which buttons you press. Sometimes things get messed up. Try exiting the DVR and then begin viewing again if problems occur.
