How to Soothe a Teething Baby

The teething stage may be one of the most difficult stages you and your baby will face. The reactions of children vary when teething, although some common symptoms include crankiness, trouble sleeping, excessive drooling, and red and swollen gums.

Instructions

Difficulty: Moderate

Things You’ll Need:

  • Teething ring
  • Medication
  • Baby's favorite book
  • Baby's favorite toy

Step1
Put your babies teething ring in the freezer and offer it to him once it's cold. Other alternatives are offering your baby a wet, frozen washcloth to chew on or giving him cool water in a bottle or sippy cup.
Step2
Give your baby a gum massage. Make sure your hands are clean and then rub her gums gently but firmly with your finger.
Step3
Ask your baby's pediatrician about using a pain reliever, such as ibuprofen (if your baby older is than 6 months) or a topical pain relief gel.
Step4
Distract your baby by reading his favorite book over and over again if it keeps him happy. You can also try to get your baby to play with her favorite toy; try anything that will keep your baby laughing and happy and not thinking about the pain.
Step5
Cuddle with your baby. Give him lots of hugs and kisses and snuggle time.

Tips & Warnings

  • A topical pain relief gel will get washed away with all the drool, but may still help.
  • Talk to your baby's pediatrician before giving your baby any medication.
