Inspirational fiction is growing in popularity among readers. Inspirational fiction is defined as fiction with a Christian theme. If you are interested in writing this type of novel, here are some tips.

Difficulty: Moderate
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • computer
  • inspirational novels (for instruction and inspiration)
  • pen or pencil and paper (if you don't use a computer)
  1. Step 1

Before you write your own inspirational novel, read a vast selection of current books. Reading inspirational fiction is the best way to understand its structure. Some popular authors are Karen Kingsbury, Francine Rivers, Ted Dekker and Brock and Bodie Thoene.

  2. Step 2

Decide on a subgenre. Inspirational fiction covers a wide variety of categories, including romance, mystery, suspense, historical and futuristic.

  3. Step 3

Choose a Bible verse. This can be a verse that relates to your story, or a personal verse to inspire you as you write.

  4. Step 4

Pray about your story and your writing.

  5. Step 5

Think about your theme. Inspirational fiction encompasses all kinds of themes. Some examples are redemption, prejudice, judgment and legalism.

  6. Step 6

Create your plot and characters. Choose you own method for this. Some writers use extensive plotting techniques, others start writing the book without too much preparation. There is no right or wrong way to write a book.

  7. Step 7

Know the "rules" of inspirational fiction. At least one character must be a Christian and have a Christian world-view. Avoid being preachy or cluttering up your novel with too many Bible verses. Integrate your spiritual theme throughout the story so that it comes through naturally through your characters and plot. Don't make your characters too perfect--even the Christian ones.

  8. Step 8

Edit your story. Just as with all novels, make sure your final draft is the best it can be.

  9. Step 9

    Submit your novel for publication.

Tips & Warnings
  • One exception regarding Christian characters is if you're writing an allegorical novel. Many allegories don't have overtly Christian characters, but Christian qualities are present in the characters.
