When submitting a novel for possible publication, editors will usually ask for a proposal first. The proposal consists of a synopsis of the book plus the first three chapters. Writing a synopsis (a summary) of a 400-page novel can be a daunting task. Here are some tips for writing a romance synopsis that will capture an editor's attention.

Difficulty: Moderate
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Write your book first, if this is your first attempt at writing a synopsis. Some writers can write a complete synopsis before writing a word of their novel, but for novice writers it's much easier to consult the completed manuscript.

  2. Step 2

Know the story and the main characters. Have a clear understanding of the hero and heroine's motivations and of the conflict keeping them from getting together.

  3. Step 3

Skip sub plots and secondary characters. Focus only on the two main characters and their romance.

  4. Step 4

Write down the main romantic plot line. This includes the inciting event (the event that gets the story started), the conflict (what keeps them apart) and the resolution (how they fall in love together at the end).

  5. Step 5

Write your synopsis in present tense.

  6. Step 6

Write tightly and concisely. Avoid description and sentences that are too wordy.

  7. Step 7

Don't leave an editor guessing. Tell the main plot exactly the way it is and don't leave any question in the editor's mind about how the story will play out. You're writing a synopsis, not a back cover blurb.

  8. Step 8

Single space the synopsis. Skip a line between each paragraph.

  9. Step 9

Edit the synopsis. You can self-edit, but it's better to have another person read it over for you. If someone else reads it, she can let you know if the story is clear in the synopsis.

  10. Step 10

Check for grammar errors and typos. You want the synopsis to be as perfect and professional as the manuscript itself.

Tips & Warnings
  • Most synopses are 3 to 5 pages long. Some editors will allow for a longer synopsis, but the romance industry standard is no more than 5 pages.
