How to Love Teaching

For all the sympathy that teachers get, I believe that teaching is a great job. Every teacher experiences that slight head tilt and "awww" when you tell someone you are a teacher. You would think that you have doomed yourself to a life of poverty and unappreciated work by choosing the teaching profession. I'm here to show you how to love being a teacher.

Instructions

Difficulty: Easy

Things You’ll Need:

  • A positive attitude

Step1
Consider yourself lucky. Research shows that 40 percent of your happiness is dependent upon your outlook (50 percent is genetic and 10 percent is situational). More information on this theory is available in the best-selling book, "The How of Happiness" (see Resources below).
Step2
Consider the time you spend working. The average teacher works 180 days a year versus the average worker who works 250 days a year. While you may (or may not) spend time grading papers at night or attending meetings, at least you are not stuck in an office building until the wee hours of the night like many other people.
Step3
Consider your office. Your office is your classroom, and most teachers get to decorate it how they see fit. You could be stuck in a lifeless cubicle or in an even less comfortable environment.
Step4
Consider your pay. Considering the amount of hours the teaching year requires, the hourly pay rate is surprisingly high.
Step5
Consider the impact. As a teacher you can lay your head on your pillow at night knowing that you are making a difference in this world. That alone should make you love this job!
