1. Check your insurance to see if you are covered for vision. If so, see what is covered. If not, make the necessary budget considerations to pay for the doctor visit. In either case, save all receipts for a possible tax advantage.
2. If an eye doctor is not assigned to you through insurance, ask around for referrals. Shop around. Don't be shy about calling and asking prices. Schedule an appointment.
3. Do the same for an optician or optical shop. Get referrals and call around. Decide which you prefer: the service of a neighborhood optician or the low cost of a major retailer.
4. If it is determined you need prescription glasses, the eye doctor will write a prescription. Ask that the prescription be faxed to the optician or optical shop.
5. Bring a trusted friend with you to shop for glasses. Dress how you would normally dress. It is not a time to be sloppy or super casual—you'll be wearing the glasses most of your waking hours, make sure you choose the most flattering frame.
6. When you pick up the glasses make sure they fit and are comfortable. Typically, the optician can adjust the glasses at no extra charge, even after a few days of wearing.
