Heat styling tools can dry and damage the hair.

Many of the things that we do to our hair to make it look beautiful can cause locks to take on a dry, damaged appearance that is anything but beautiful. Heat styling, chemical treatments, and frequent washing can lead to frizzy, brittle hair. To help restore hair to a healthy state, follow a few simple tips. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

    • 1

Get a professional haircut to remove split ends and damaged hair. Depending on how much damage exists and how short you're willing to go, you may be able to get rid of most of the damaged hair in one haircut. Return to the salon for regular trims as your hair grows to combat future split ends.

    • 2

Cut back on the frequency of shampooing. Shampoo can strip the hair of oils, causing dryness. Wash your hair every two to three days, or more infrequently if desired. Choose a shampoo designed for damaged hair.

    • 3

Use a deep conditioning treatment once a week and a leave-in conditioner after shampooing. Deep conditioning treatments or masks usually need to be left on wet hair 10 to 20 minutes (depending on the brand) before being rinsed out.

    • 4

Limit the use of heat styling products such as flat irons, curling irons and hot rollers. Before using any of these items, protect hair with a thermal protective spray or serum.

    • 5

Allow hair to air dry whenever possible. If you use a blow-dryer, set the temperature to low or medium. Point the nozzle down to avoid frizziness.
