Make Warm Garlic Oil for Ear Infections

I used to get terrible ear infections as a child. Each time I'd wake up in the night with such pain; I couldn't fall back to sleep. One ear infection was so bad, my ear wouldn't stop oozing. I'd go to the doctor the next day and get antibiotics.

Now we know that constant antibiotics use isn't necessarily good for you. Some of my ear infections were rather mild. Instead of running to the doctor, I wish someone had thought to use a home remedy. Or why not use a home remedy in the middle of the night when the doctor's office isn't open? If it feels better in the morning, then you may be able to avoid a doctor's visit.

Keep in mind that if you let an ear infection go too long, you could actually lose your hearing. But using this warm garlic oil is a nice supplement to antibiotics, and can help considerably in mild cases.

Difficulty: Moderate
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • 2 cloves garlic, peeled and crushed
  • 1/2 cup olive oil
  • Microwave
  • Glass mason jar
  • Microwave safe bowl
  1. Step 1

There are two potential methods for making this garlic oil. One involves the microwave, which means the oil will be ready right away. This oil doesn't have as long of a shelf life. In the other option, you need to let the garlic and oil steep for at least a week.

  2. Step 2

To prepare it in the microwave, add the oil and garlic to a microwave safe bowl. Microwave on high for 30 seconds to 1 minute, or until the oil becomes hot. Apply it to the ear with a dropper or a Q-tip once the oil cools to room temperature. You'll need to use this within a few days.

  3. Step 3

You can prepare this oil in advance, and it will keep for about 1 to 2 weeks after it's ready. Add the garlic to a mason jar. Pour oil into jar. Seal it tightly and store in a cool, dry place. The oil will be ready in one week.

  4. Step 4

Once you add the oil to your ear, you'll want to keep it in there for at least one minute. You can keep it in for longer if you're really in pain.

  5. Step 5

This preparation helps relieve the pain, and it also takes advantage of the fact that garlic has antibacterial properties.

Tips & Warnings
  • Make sure you sterilize the jar.
  • See a doctor if the home remedy doesn't work or if you're in severe pain.
  • Don't ever apply hot oil to your ear. Wait until it's at room temperature.

on 7/20/2009 my husband had chronic ear infections and many rounds of ineffective antibiotics. an ayurvedic naturopath prescribed garlic in olive oil, and it was a miracle! my husband could even go scuba diving as long as he has the garlic oil. No more ear infections, no more antibiotics for ear infections.
