How to Write an Effective, Balanced Lesson Plan

Creating a classroom environment that is fun yet challenging for the learners can be a difficult balance. Today, more than ever, studies show that learners want to learn by doing; they want less lecture and more hands on. Nonetheless, you don’t have to stand on your head and juggle to keep students enthusiastic. Follow these steps to create an effective, balanced lesson plan. These steps are based on a 60-minute consecutive weekday class so if your classes are longer or meet less often, expand these points accordingly.

Instructions

Difficulty: Moderate

Things You’ll Need:

  • Lesson plan
  • Syllabus
  • Course text book
Step1
Use the first 5 minutes to recap the previous lesson. Control the recap and do not let the class take over with too many questions. Put any questions to the side and have students see you after class.
Step2
Discuss for 15-20 minutes the next lesson. This is the “lecture” part of the class. Include examples of any theory or skill.
Step3
Create a break out session of 15-20 minutes for students to practice what was just discussed. Have easy-to-meet requirements for this hands-on part.
Step4
Regroup the class and assess what was learned for the remaining time of the class. Remind the students that this is where the learning takes place--during the assessment. Create an environment that is safe and fun where students feel free to share their results.

Tips & Warnings

  • Search the Internet for creative ways to do breakout sessions or ask another teacher.
  • Sit in on a similar class.
  • The assessment should not be too judgemental as this is the first time students are doing the new activity.
