Difficulty: Moderate
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Before you explain the presidential primaries, tell your kids the basics about the United States Electoral College. Tell your kids what a delegate is and how delegates matter to the overall election process.

  2. Step 2

Tell your kids about the difference between a caucus and a primary. It’s very easy for an adult to confuse the two. It’s important to explain the difference, though, as your kids will hear both words quite often.

  3. Step 3

Tell your kids the difference between a primary and an election. Be sure to explain that a candidate can lose a primary but still be very involved in the overall election.

  4. Step 4

Watch the primaries with your kids. Your kids will very likely get confused if they watch the primaries on their own. Spend time watching the primaries with your kids and be available to answer questions.

  5. Step 5

Go online with your kids and visit http://www.pocanticohills.org/election/president.htm. This website explains the election in a manner that is suited for kids. By going on this website with your kids you can help explain the primaries and the election, answer any questions and possibly learn something in the process.
