How to Trace Your Roots With National Geographic's Genographic Project
According to DNA studies, humans originated on the African continent and journeyed outward to other parts of the globe. Co-sponsored by the National Geographic Society, IBM, geneticist Spencer Wells and the Waitt Family Foundation, the National Geographic Genographic Project was launched online. The Project combines the sciences of population genetics and molecular biology to trace the human journey from Africa, and you too can participate in the Project by following the suggestions below.

Go to the National Geographic Genographic Project's website. Click "How to Participate" from the top row menu.

On the "How to Participate" page, click on your region location in the Participant Kit order box ("United States & Canada" or "International").

To order the Genographic Project's Public Participation Kit, first read the terms and conditions of participation and select "I Accept." Then click "Add to Shopping Cart" button at the bottom of the page. (If you need more than one kit, change the number in the "quantity" box.)

You'll receive your Genographic Project Public Participation Kit in the mail. It includes a Buccal Swab kit, a multimedia DVD about the Project, a National Geographic genographic map, a self-addressed envelope and a confidential Genographic Project ID number.
