For some up and coming cartoonists, DC Comics is the Holy Grail of comic book publishers. But it may seem like getting your work reviewed by DC is close to impossible. Don’t give up hope--there’s good news. DC recently launched am Internet comic artist social network called "Zuda Comics." Because few artists know that this DC Comics-owned site exists, participants in this “community of artists” stand a good chance of being noticed by the powers that be. No promises, but Zuda Comics could be your back-door entry to a career as a professional comic book artist. While your work will be reviewed by DC Comics staff members, here’s the caveat: like all social networking communities, you and your content are also subject to comments and criticisms from other members. In fact, this is how your work will be ultimately judged, because Zuda Comics is not only a web comics showcase, it's also a monthly online comic artist competition. Winners are offered a one-year contract, where Zuda Comics/DC will cyber-publish “52 episodes” of their comic book serial for a $1,000 prize plus a small percentage of merchandising and reprint rights.

Instructions

Difficulty: Moderately Challenging

Things You’ll Need:

  • Computer
  • Internet connection
  • Digitized comic art story
  • Thick skin

Step1
Go to the Zuda Comics website (see Resources below). Look through the types of comics offered. Is your comic’s style and narrative an easy fit with Zuda Comics’ content?
Step2
To become a Zuda member, register with them through the link in the Resources section. Like most social networking sites, access is free. Read Zuda’s submission policy. If it seems unreasonable, proceed no further. If the submission policy is acceptable to you, click the “I Accept” button.
Step3
After completing registration, enter information about your comic, including the title, genre, a brief synopsis or concept description of your comic, and a more thorough explanation of story (similar to a movie treatment) along with descriptions of essential characters.
Step4
Upload 8 file samples or “screens” that best represent your comic.
Step5
Click the “Send” button to have your work reviewed by Zuda’s editorial team.

Tips & Warnings

  • While being a Zuda artist may seem like chicken change when compared to becoming a DC Comics print artist, it may be an easier way to get inside the door.
  • If you still have reservations about submitting your original work to Zuda Comics, have a lawyer review Zuda’s legalese.
