Watch the documentary “The Civil War.” Created by Ken Burns, “The Civil War” is roughly an 11-hour journey into the Civil War. This documentary is perfect for the person who is unfamiliar with the Civil War in general.
Step2
Watch the movies “Glory” and “Gettysburg.” While it’s true that both of these movies are not 100 percent historically accurate, they do give viewers a great insight on what life was like during the Civil War.
Step3
Read “The Killer Angels” and “Courage on Little Round Top.” These two novels give a fascinating insight into the Battle of Gettysburg, the bloodiest battle of the entire Civil War.
Step4
Visit a Civil War battlefield or museum. These sites will have loads of information regarding both the particular battle and the Civil War in general. Visiting a battlefield will also give you an appreciation about that particular battle.
Step5
Attend a Civil War reenactment in person. These can be found around the country and are a fascinating look into what life was like during the Civil War. These events give great insight into how a battle was fought. They’re also a great way to see in person how the soldiers lived during the Civil War, as the participants of the reenactments go to great lengths to ensure that everything is authentic.
