Applying mineral makeup takes a bit of getting used to from traditional makeup applications. Once you master HOW to do it, you'll find it's much quicker and covers all sorts of flaws in a snap!

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Mineral foundation powder;
  • Yellow color corrector; for dark areas such as age spots or beneath the eyes
  • Green color corrector if necessary for red areas (roseaca, broken veins, ruddiness);
  • Concealer for acne or other areas needing "extra help";
  • Flat top foundation brush;
  • Mineral blush;
  • Blush, Powder, or Kabuki brush;
  • Concealer brush;
  • Eye shadow brushes;
  • Eye liner brush
  • Mineral eye shadow powders

    Start with a freshly washed and moisturized face. Allow the moisturizer to sink in before beginning to avoid a "cakey" look. See how blotchy this face is to begin?

    Using a concealer brush, apply color correctors (yellow for dark spots such as age spots or beneath the eyes; green for red areas)to any well defined areas. Apply concealer over any other areas you'd like to hide. For all over corrections, use a kabuki or powder brush to cover the area (the ruddiness on this face is covered with green color corrector using a powder brush).

  3. Step 3
    There should just be a light dusting of powder on your brush.

    Tap the foundation into the lid of the jar. Using a flat top foundation brush or a kabuki brush, swirl lightly in the lid and tap the excess back into the lid (or tap the handle end on the counter). Too much will look cakey, so tap off all excess. This also settles the powder onto the brush hairs so that it will apply smoothly.

  4. Step 4

    Beginning with the outside of your face, apply foundation in a circular motion, applying pressure as you go. This is called "buffing", which will bring out the qualities in the minerals. Spread down the jawline and over the nose, up to the forehead. 2-3 "swirlfuls" should be enough to cover your face in 1 layer. Repeat as desired for coverage. Remember, it's easier to add layers than it is to remove them!

  5. Step 5

    Tap out a small amount of blush, and swirl a blush or powder brush into the powder. Tap off excess, just as you did the foundation. Stiple or softly blend in on your cheeks, with a quick brush over your "T" zone. Using a blush brush will highlight cheekbones; a powder brush will give a more feathered, subtle look of color.

  6. Step 6
    Lighter, more shimmery colors on the lower lid and in the crease; less shimmer above.

    How eye shadow is applied will vary widely by individual and by eye shape. In this case, the upper eyelids are puffy, so to shimmery colors are used on the lower lids, and more matte shades above, so as not to reflect as much light. By dipping a wet eye liner brush into any shade, you'll get a beautiful eyeliner that will last all day.

  7. Step 7

    Eye liners can be created from any color eye shadow. By dipping a wet eye liner brush into any shade, you'll get a beautiful eyeliner that will last all day.

Tips & Warnings
  • Use mineral makeup sparingly; a little goes a very long way!
  • For especially oily skin, wear a layer of Oil Absorb beneath your foundation to absorb excess oil all day long.
  • If you suffer from overly dry skin, you can mix your foundation with a drop or two of moisturizer.
