After what happened in the Garden of Eden, snakes and men have been mortal enemies. Snakes are afraid of smoke, but it is illegal in many U.S. states to light an open fire. You can be arrested for arson. If you have problems with snakes on your property, here are some steps to take.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Tobacco seeds and leaves
  • Cigarettes

    Snake Deterrent

  1. Step 1

Plant tobacco around your property. Snakes resent the smell of tobacco. It is repulsive to them. You can also spread dry tobacco leaves around your property.

  2. Step 2

Mow your lawn often. Snakes do not like being disturbed by sound and movement. This is because they shed their skins and when they do so, they are at their weakest.

  3. Step 3

There are also two kinds of snakes: the poisonous and non-poisonous. The only difference between them is their bite. The poisonous ones bite once; the non-poisonous ones bite several times.

Tips & Warnings
  • Try to keep your environments uncluttered. Snakes hate where they cannot hide.
  • Never aggravate a snake. That is never smart. These steps are preventative.

on 6/29/2009 We use tobacco all the time in Ghana. As a snake repellent, we spread the tobacco seeds around the farm or we burn the fresh leaves in a contained fire in the middle of the farm. This applies to all snakes. The intention is to create an inhospitable environment for the snakes. They hate smoke, let alone nicotine-filled smoke.

on 6/28/2009 I would like more info on snakes resenting the smell of tobacco plants? I grew up in rural North Carolina and as a teen, worked in the tobacco fields. We have seen snakes in the field, under the plants, and even around the tobacco barns(which has plenty of dried tobacco leaves around it). I ask to determine if this is suppose to work on certain types of snakes.

on 6/17/2009 Thanks for the information. I heard from a park ranger that you can put a fake owl in your yard and it would keep the snakes away.
