Play Games to Kill Time on Long Drives

Long drives can become tedious and boring. Here's how to liven things up and keep you and your passengers sharp with mind games. These are sure to kill at least a few hours.

From Quick Guide: Guide to Car Games
Difficulty: Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Car
  • Plenty of time to kill
  1. Step 1

Play "How Many Miles?" Look far ahead on the highway for a bridge or large billboard. Ask each person to guess exactly how many miles ahead it is. Check the odometer and count the tenths of a mile that go by until it is reached. The person who has come closest wins. Play until you get bored.

  2. Step 2

Try "20 Questions." Have the driver or a passenger think of any person, place or thing. Take turns asking a "yes" or "no" question in an attempt to identify that person, place or thing. The person who guesses correctly is the winner. But if 20 questions elapse, the "guessee" wins.

  3. Step 3

Play "Initials." Think of any initials and take turns coming up with famous people or people you both know who boast those initials. The first person who can't think of anybody loses the game.

  4. Step 4

Look at the letters on license plates. Try to come up with funny phrases with those letters as initials. If the letters on a license plate are PAC, someone might exclaim "Pickles Are Crunchy!" See who comes up with the funniest ones.

  5. Step 5

Play "Three Thirds of a Ghost." Players take turns saying a letter without finishing a word. The player who completes a word loses the round and is "one third of a ghost." The player who completes three words loses the game.

  6. Step 6

Play "Alphabetize Anything." Pick a category such as rock bands or actors or countries. Start with "A" and try to come up with one that begins with that letter. Continue playing until the alphabet is completed. The player who can't think of one loses. Eliminate letters such as "Q" or "X" if they are too hard.

Tips & Warnings
  • Create your own games. There's plenty of time on long drives to come up with new games. Such games tend to bring couples and families together and can be played during long drives in the future.
  • If you're driving, don't get overly engaged in any game. Keep your eyes on the road and your mind on the task at hand.

on 3/12/2008 Yes, we play the ABC games where you choose an object with each beginning letter, and mark them off as we find them. Thanks for the other ideas too.
