How to Creatively Kill Ants

Ant infestation is one of the most frustrating pest problems encountered. If it's too how outside, the ants come in. If it's too cold outside, the ants come in. And no matter how air-tight your home may seem to be, the ants always find a way. Long strings of them, marching off to battle in your pantry, your dog food, your refrigerator and, yes, even your toothbrush. While most pesticides and pest control kills ants (kind of), it can also be harmful to your family and pets. If you go poison-free, you can kill them with gluttony. Read on to learn more.

Instructions

Difficulty: Easy

Things You’ll Need:

  • Cornmeal
  • A small dish

Step1
Track down from where the ants originate. Follow the line of ants, and you'll probably see them ducking away in a corner, a behind a window sill and near the molding at the edge of the wall and the floor.
Step2
Pour about a half cup of cornmeal on a bread dish, and leave it just beside the entrance the ants are using.
Step3
Wait about 3 days if it's dry, a week or so if it happens to be wet or rainy. If you see the ants hovering around the cornmeal, that's a good thing. They will carry it back to their home, but they can digest it, so they die. And the cornmeal isn't the least bit harmful to children and animals.
Step4
Sweep up any dead ants that may not have escaped your house. You might notice a pile of dead ants around the dish of cornmeal. Whistle a tune of triumph as you sweep them up.

Tips & Warnings

  • Less efficient, but far more fun is to fill up a squirt gun with glass cleaner and spray down the line of ants all the way back to their home. Cleanup is messier, and you have to repeat the trick for a couple of days; but getting rid of ants has rarely been more satisfying.

on 6/15/2008 Instead of glass cleaner put some dishwashing liquid and water in a squirt bottle. Soapy liguid suffocates insects. Just wipe up with a sponge. Clean up done and the floor is cleaner than when you started.
