How to Shrink a Baseball Cap

Shrink your hat to customize the fit.

Fitted baseball caps offer a comfortable fit and a better look than adjustable hats. If you're between sizes, or can't find the size you need, you can still make that fitted hat look and feel good. Choose a 100 percent wool hat that's slightly too big, and then shrink the hat to fit you head.

1. Make sure the cap you want to shrink is 100 percent wool. Most fitted baseball caps are, but this method only works with wool caps.

2. Tighten a hat that's only slightly too big. Dampen the entire cap -- except the bill -- and put it on. It may be somewhat uncomfortable, but keep the cap on your head until it dries. It will shrink as it dries and conform to the shape and size of your head. If the cap does not shrink enough, repeat the process.

3. Shrink a hat that's much too large. Dampen the inner band just inside the cap opening. Dry the cap completely using a hair dryer. Try it on. If it still needs slight tightening, dampen the whole hat and wear it until it is dry. If it still needs extensive shrinking, repeat this step.

Tips & Warnings

• Don't get the bill of the hat wet. Bills on most baseball caps have a cardboard core that can mold or mildew if it becomes wet.
