Step1
Listen to the beliefs of the people around you. Discuss the ability to carry out a dying person’s wishes and their ability to set their own opinions aside.
Step2
Decide which of your children or grandchildren you will ask to carry out your wishes. You may choose your spouse.
Step3
Learn of the choices the appointed power will have to make. Understand the finality of a DNR and living will and the responsibility of a simple signature on such documents.
Step4
Consult a lawyer to help you protect your assets and write guidelines for your appointed power to follow if you become unable to express them yourself.
Step5
Select a person and ask them to take on the responsibility of an appointed power. Have back-ups. Your first choice may say no thank you.
Step6
Counsel your appointed power. Discuss at length how you want your life to end and what to do with your assets.
Step7
Write out your wishes as clearly and concisely as possible. Leave no room for personal judgments. You want your appointed power to remain objective.
