Plotting out your novel before you write the book can help you stay on track as you write. You can also address any character, conflict or storyline problems during the plotting process. This will save you time in the rewriting phase of your writing. Read on for some tips for plotting your novel.

Instructions

Difficulty: Moderately Easy

Things You’ll Need:

  • Computer
  • Spreadsheets (optional)
  • Index cards, plain or colored (optional)
  • Pen, pencil and paper (if not using a computer)
Step1
Know the basic structure of a book. Every novel or story has a beginning, a middle and an end. The beginning is the inciting incident. The middle encompasses the conflicts the characters face. The end is the resolution and conclusion of the story.
Step2
Know who your protagonist and antagonist are. You can do character charts or questionnaires about the characters in order to get to know them better. Once you know their motivation (why they do the things they do) you will have a better idea of how your story is going to play out.
Step3
Know your setting and time frame. Where is your story taking place? What time during the year? How many days, weeks or months? Write a timeline of your story. This will help you keep track of what is happening when.
Step4
Write each scene out on index cards, or use an outline. Writing out each scene helps cement the story in your mind.
Step5
Don't be afraid to mix things up or delete scenes if they aren't working. You don't have to be a slave to your outline or your plot.
Step6
Write your story, referring to your outline/cards and timeline as often as necessary.

Tips & Warnings

  • All authors have their own way of plotting. Some use outlines or cards, others use spreadsheets or whiteboards. Find a plotting technique that works for you.
