You just got an iPod Touch, congratulations! Notice that it's missig some features, such as Notes, or Mail, or even some games? Well Jailbreaking (a.k.a. hacking) your iPod will do the trick for you!
Once Jailbroken, you can email, text (using the mail application), check the weather, customize, and much more!
Please note, if you're iPod is currently in firmware 1.1.3, please read my other tutorial before starting this one.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • iPod Touch (8gb or 16 gb)
  • Computer
  • Firefox as your browser (this is a MUST)
  1. Step 1
    The Summary Tab.
    The Summary Tab.

Before you begin, restore the iPod because just incase the program decides to be stubborn or a application crashes or freezes the iPod. Keep the iPod connected.
To begin Jailbreaking, you need your firmware to be 1.1.1. To check your firmware, go to iTunes, click on the iPod, click on "summary" tab.
If your iPod is already 1.1.1, good for you, please skip step 2, if it isn't, please continue, you will have to downgrade.

  2. Step 2
    Downgrading the iPod
    Downgrading the iPod

To downgrade, go to this site, http://www.megaupload.com/?d=V7H8X2QQ
Save the firmware to your Desktop. This may take a little time. When completed go to iTunes and get to the Summary tab. Option click the "Update" button. Click "Choose" and let it do it's thing. If you receive an error, 1015, don't freak, this is expected. There, you now have your iPod in 1.1.1

  3. Step 3
    jailbreakme.com
    jailbreakme.com

Assuming you are on 1.1.1, disconnect the iPod and go to Safari on the iPod. Go to, jailbreakme.com Remember the "me" part at the end, I've forgotten it several times leading to much frustration.
Once you're there, go to the bottom of the page and click "Install AppSnapp".
It should redirect you and begin downloading. This step took me quite a while, 4 attempts, but i kept trying. If you have slow internet connection, expect this to take as long as 5 minutes, if it's not loading, simply shut down the iPod and try again, it'll happen.

  4. Step 4
    Installer
    Installer

When this is completed, the iPod automatically restarts, when it's done, you should see a blue icon named Installer sitting there waiting for you to have fun!

Tips & Warnings
  • Be peristant, my first attempts to get Installer took so long that I quit, put it aside and tried again later. Fourth attempt loaded within 5 seconds because I switched my WiFi network
  • For step 2, YOU MUST USE FIREFOX. Safari doesn't work.
  • If anything happens (iPod is insanely slow, freezes, etc.) Just restore it, and repeat the process.
  • If you want to restore the iPod to it's normal settings, just click restore, if it doesn't work the first time, try until it does.
  • When you're downgrading and the file simply disappears, just download it again.
  • Doing this will void you Apple warranty
  • This is not illegal as some might think, you are merely adding on to a product you purchased. It's only illegal if you exploit the programs already on the iPod.
