How to Determine which Golf Club to Use Based on your Distance from the Hole

Choosing the right club for a drive, chip, or putt is a crucial part of gaining a successful golf game. You need to know yourself and know your clubs well in order to choose wisely; but here are a few general guidelines for choosing the right club.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Set of Golf Clubs
  • Tees
  • Golf Balls
  1. Step 1

Go to a driving range and gauge how far you can hit a ball with each club. Write down your mean and median distances in a notebook so that you can remember it.

  2. Step 2

When driving, use a 3, 2, or 1 wood for extremely long holes, or use a low iron (5, 4, or 3) for short holes. Read the distance to the hole on the sign at each hole, and refer to your notebook to determine which club would work best.

  3. Step 3

If you hit the ball well on a long hole, play a mid to high iron to get the ball from the fairway onto the green. Be careful to use less club than you think you need here. Many golfers make the mistake of over-hitting the ball on their second swing. If you are in the rough or heavy rough, use more club than you think you need, because you will likely need to clear natural obstacles to reach the hole.

  4. Step 4

If you are outside the green in the pitching rough, use your pitching wedge. In a sand trap, use your sand wedge. Chipping is a precise part of the game that requires a less is more attitude.

  5. Step 5

As you approach the green, take out your putter, measure your shot, and putt until your ball goes into the hole.
