This trick won’t help you play any better, but it may help you give the impression that you know what you’re doing. Follow these steps to begin spinning your drumsticks and building your speed through practice.
Hold one drumstick in your dominant hand., between your index finger and middle finger, as you might hold a cigarette. Hold it in the middle of the stick, squeezing it between your two fingers just below the first knuckle on your middle finger.
Step2
By keeping your hand and the tip of your middle finger mostly still and using the tip of your index finger to control the stick, try to draw large circles in the air with the end of the stick.
Step3
When this feels comfortable, slowly increase your speed. When you’re spinning your stick quickly, your index finger will be the only part of your hand moving significantly.
Step4
Once you’ve mastered this with your dominant hand, attempt it with your other hand. When this feels comfortable, try doing both simultaneously.
Tips & Warnings
Depending on the size of your hand, you might have more success with this technique with smaller or larger sticks. Attempt it with different sizes.
If you practice too much, you might develop red spots or blisters along the sides of your fingers. These will eventually develop into calluses if you continue practicing.
