How to Decorate Silver Leaf Easter Eggs

Silver leaf is the perfect way to decorate Easter eggs with an antique look. You can use silver leaf foil from the craft store to transform plain and clean egg shells into elegant Easter egg art in no time. Try making a dozen of these silver leaf foil Easter eggs. Display them in a basket as a centerpiece on the dinner table.

Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Raw eggs
  • Water
  • Silver leaf sheets
  • Dry paintbrush
  • Needle
  1. Step 1

    Press a hole in the top of your egg using the needle.

  2. Step 2

    Repeat this step making a hole in the bottom of the egg.

  3. Step 3

    Place your mouth on one hole and blow the egg whites and yolk out the other hole. Start small and continue to blow until the entire insides are removed.

  4. Step 4

    Run some water into the small holes and shake the eggs to remove the final bit of egg.

  5. Step 5

    Set your clean whole egg shells to dry.

  6. Step 6

    Place one sheet of silver leaf onto a dried egg shell. Press the foiled sheet onto the egg with a dry clean paintbrush. Gently brush the silver leaf onto the egg. It will adhere as you press it into the egg.

  7. Step 7

    Lay another sheet of silver leaf right next to the first sheet. Repeat the process of pressing the foiled sheet into the egg with your dry paintbrush.

  8. Step 8

    Continue silver leafing the eggs until they are covered completely.

  9. Step 9

    Set the silver leafed Easter eggs back in the clean egg carton to rest until you are ready to decorate with them.

Tips & Warnings
  • Buy silver leaf in an antique silver tone to get an older look.
  • Do not touch the silver leaf with your fingers if at all possible. You can wear white cotton gloves when handling the eggs.
  • Have a raw extra eggs on hand in case you break a few while pressing the holes.
  • You can also buy antique gold leaf and coat the raw egg shells in that as well. Mix and match the colors to create custom looking antique eggs.
  • You can buy silver leaf and gold leaf fo you Easter eggs at the local art or craft store.
  • Try stringing a long thread through the two holes in the eggs. You can use this to hang your silver leaf Easter eggs in your home as decoration. Use a needle that is longer than your eggs are tall.
