How to Avoid Unwanted Advice About Baby Names

When it comes to baby names, everyone has an opinion. Sometimes this advice is helpful--that is, if you're actually seeking advice. Sometimes advice givers can become nags or, in some cases, try to push you into a name choice. Here's how to avoid unwanted baby name advice.

1. Solicit opinions about your prospective baby names only if you want them.

2. Keep your names decisions or choices to yourself. If people ask you about your choices, tell them, "We have no idea yet." That may eliminate the discussion.

3. Listen to any advice that is given to you about baby names. Smile and nod, and thank others for their ideas. People like to talk about baby names, so let them have their fun and move on.

4. If anyone becomes a serious nag and tries to push you into giving your child a name you don't want, or if they pose a strong objection to the name you've chosen and won't let up, flat out tell them that the discussion is over.

5. Claiming superstition can end the baby name discussion, as in, "Yes, we have a name, but I'm too superstitious to tell anyone."

6. You can always "blame" your spouse for rejecting an unwanted name suggestion. Say something like, "Oh, I like Olivia too, but my husband hates it." You can also claim that Olivia was a bully in your elementary school, or your husband's psycho ex-girlfriend, or someone similarly non-namesake worthy.

on 7/21/2008 Love number 6. Worked for me. :) My first grandbaby is on the way. Do what we do and refer to your baby by the chosen name in every conversation if you've already decided on a name. No need to say 'the baby' anymore and it will grow on everyone in no time.
