Do you, blank, take thee, blank, as your lawfully wedded wife? Or are you hoping to commit yourself to your life partner in a more creative way? For many couples, personalized wedding vows feel more special and genuine. Here's how to write creative wedding vows.

Instructions

Difficulty: Moderate

Step1
Figure out together what you want to promise each other that's typically included in wedding vows, such as loyalty ("in sickness and health"), fidelity, and lifelong commitment. Include these in your vows, using whatever wording your choose.
Step2
Figure out together what you want to promise each other that isn't included in the typical vows. This could be many things: trust, equality, patience, willingness to listen, kindness, or whatever is important to you. Add these in your vows, using whatever wording you choose.
Step3
Decide how you want to include (or omit) religion in your vows. You can do this in whatever way feels most meaningful. You might want to ask a clergy member for suggestions or guidance.
Step4
Reference any particular obstacles you have or will have to deal with together in your vows--military service, a disability, geographic distance, an interfaith or interracial relationship, and so forth. Promise each other to work together to overcome this obstacle and to support each other no matter what.
Step5
If you have children, from either this relationship or another, include them in the vows, or write separate vows especially for them.

Tips & Warnings

  • Feel free to include humor, as long as it is not inappropriate.
  • Make sure you have a microphone or other device to make sure your guests can hear your special vows.
  • Take turns reading your list of vows, or read them together.
