Choosing foundation can be tricky. Have you ever looked at yourself in the mirror in a different light than the one you applied the foundation and said, "Why in the world did I buy this color?" Here is the simplest and easiest way to find the foundation that's right for you.

Instructions

Difficulty: Easy

Things You’ll Need:

  • Clean face
  • Natural outdoor lighting
  • Numerous foundations to test
Step1
Realize the reality of your skin. Is your skin dry, normal, oily or a combination? Most people have combination skin. If you are dry, your foundation should have a touch of moisturizer in it. If you're normal, you might not need the extra moisturizer, but you don't want any oil in your foundation. If you're oily, you want to make sure your foundation has a oil absorber in it.
Step2
What type of coverage do you expect or want from your foundation. Do you want a natural look? Do you have a number of facial blemishes that you expect your foundation to hide? Do you want a matte finish or a natural finish? Once you've been able to determine what you want your foundation to do, it's time to go to the next step.
Step3
Try on numerous shades of foundation (applied to a clean face) and look at yourself in natural light. If that means walking outside of the store and looking in the mirror, then this is what you must do. You shouldn't be able to see a visible line along your chin line. It should blend in with your natural face tone, while enhancing your natural color.
Step4
Once you've found the best foundation match for your skin be prepared to have to choose a different shade come the next season. Most folks wear a different shade in the winter than they do in the summer.

Tips & Warnings

  • Sometimes it might help to take a friend along who will tell you the truth about how a particular shade looks on you.
  • When you go to look for foundation, take your time. Don't just settle, find what you really like and what really feels good on your face.
  • Don't be afraid to ask the sales people at department store counters if they can give you a sample that you may be able to wear for a day or two and see if you still like it as much in different types of lights.
