      Make sure a trademark is what you need. A quick visit to the United States Patent and Trademark Office will give you information on trademarks, patents, and copywriting of intellectual property. If a trademark is what you need, then continue to step 2.

      Check out the general rules and requirements for applying for a trademark. The links below will take you to an FAQ and some other information you may want to know before continuing.

      Your local library may have CD-ROM database information available if you can't use TESS.

      Now some research! Click the link below to research your name (and design if you have one) in the Trademark Electronic Search System (TESS). The USTPO website has instructions for searching designs as well as what to do if you find a name or design similar to the one you want to register.

      Use USTPO's online resources to make sure your application is complete!

      Now you will need to write a statement about the goods and services for which your trademark name will be used. Your application will not be considered complete without this statement. Some links to guides are included below!

      Application fees can be costly.  Be prepared before you begin the process!

      It's time to register your name now that you've done your research and writing! Use the Trademark Electronic Application System (TEAS) to complete your application and check it for errors. You will need a credit card to pay for the fees for submitting your application. Depending on which method you use, fees start at $275 for online applications with a typical trademark application costing $325. Once paid, your submitted application can be tracked through the six month to one year process that it may take for your trademark to be approved!
