Do you use an email program on your computer? Do you use a laptop? Do you have difficulty sending emails? Do you get SMTP errors? If you answered yes to any of the above questions, this article may be for you. Post Cast Server is an SMTP server that you can run on your own computer. This means that you can send emails from your computer directly to the internet and to its destination quickly, rather than going to your email server (ex: yahoo.com, gmail.com, hotmail.com, etc...) then to the internet. Running your own FREE SMTP SERVER is a great way to ensure your emails are getting to their destination with a greater certainty.

Instructions

Difficulty: Moderate

Things You’ll Need:

  • Computer
  • Internet
  • Email Program

Step1
Read all steps before doing anything.
Step2
Go to the Post Cast Server Website (there is a link below) and download the install file for the Post Cast Server Free Edition.
Step3
Install Post Cast Server Free Edition. It's very simple. If you're not too sure of what you're doing, then you need only walk through the install process quickly by clicking 'next' a few times.
Step4
Open Program Open the program.
Step5
Settings Click on the "Settings" button on the top of the program window. This will open the settings control.
Step6
For your SMTP server to work, it needs to connect to a DNS (Domain Name Server) in order to get online.

To access the correct DNS address for you, click the "Detect" button. The program will detect the DNS server automatically. If there are more than one, then you will have to pick one from a list.
Step7
For more ease, you will more than likely want emails to be sent from your SMTP server immediately. Thus, select the "Immediately" radio button, and set the delay to 0 minutes.
Step8
Note the hostname of your computer - you'll need this later.
Step9
Click OK.
Step10
Now you have an SMTP server set up on your computer. Now you only have to set your email program to use it.

Open your email program.
Step11
Open your email program's account settings.
Step12
Create a new SMTP server in the settings. Its server name should be the hostname from step 8 above.
Step13
Set this new SMTP server as the default in your settings.
Step14
Apply your changes in your account settings.

All done! You now have your very own SMTP server on your computer.

Tips & Warnings

  • If you are using this program with a laptop that you travel with, you will need to re-detect your DNS server every time you want to send an email from a new location.
