How to Communicate Your Needs

How do you get the people around you to respect your needs and wants - this article will show you how.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

The first step to communicating your needs to others, is to decide what you really want. Do you want people to really listen to you? Do you want people to respect you and your time? Do you want people to treat you fairly and honestly? Once you decide what it is you want, you can communicate those needs to others.

  2. Step 2

The next step is to take a good, hard look at yourself. Do others see you as whiny? Do you come across as overbearing or rude? Ask a close friend if you need to work on how you communicate with others - often we don't see ourselves in the same way that others see us.

  3. Step 3

When you are getting ready to talk to someone about what you need/want, plan it out. Figure out the main points that you want to communicate, and then state those points in a clear, friendly, simple way. After you talk to the person, ask them "Did you understand what I was asking/telling you?". If they did, then you have succeeded in communicating your needs to others - if not, take a deep breath and try again.

  4. Step 4

If you are having trouble talking to someone (or getting them to understand you), it might be helpful to put your thoughts down on paper, and then share those thoughts with the other person.
