Sacred space is an area of your home or even outside that you designate as being a place to commune with divinity. Some examples of sacred space are a church, a sweat lodge or a corner of your home that has an altar. If you wanted to, you could make every area of your home sacred space, although not many people do this. Normally, they pick out a corner of a room, and then turn that corner into sacred space.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Choose an area of your home that you want to turn into sacred space.

  2. Step 2

Clear this area of clutter and clean it thoroughly. Sweep and mop or vacuum the floor, dust furniture and fixtures and do whatever else is necessary to clean the area.

  3. Step 3

Open a window and allow fresh air to circulate for an hour or so. This is a good way to clear any negativity from the area. Whether or not you believe that rooms can collect negative emotions and energy, doing this will also freshen the room and give you a good feeling.

  4. Step 4

Add a few items that have spiritual meaning to you. Do it without cluttering up your sacred space, though. Having a small table or box as an alter to keep these items on is how many people choose to delineate sacred space in their homes.

  5. Step 5

Spend time daily in the sacred space that you’ve created. The more time you spend there reflecting, and doing other activities that make you feel good, the more sacred the space becomes.

Tips & Warnings
  • Besides using your sacred space to reflect on the divine and your life, you can also use this time to do yoga or start a meditation practice. In reality the ideas are only limited by your imagination.
  • Periodically clear your sacred space by smudging it with sage, opening a window to allow fresh air to circulate, drumming or even singing. This keeps the area from getting stagnant and disperses any negative energy.
  • Do activities in your sacred space that you enjoy, and don’t be afraid to try new activities such as journaling, creating artwork, beading or any other activity that helps you to know yourself better and to connect with the divine.
  • Consider playing soothing music such as Native American flute music or Celtic music when you are spending time in sacred space. When you’ve had a stressful day, spending time in your sacred space and listening to music can sooth and calm you.
  • If you create sacred space and then don’t use it, don’t keep it clean or allow it to basically go fallow you will notice the effect on your life right away. Sacred space that isn’t taken care of properly, or that is allowed to gather dust, begins to reflect in a negative fashion onto the rest of your life. So even if you cannot spend time there every day, take even 10 minutes every few days to dust and clear the area. If you can turn it into a dual thing by also using the time to reflect on your life and your relationship with the divine all the better!
