How to Decorate a Mantle

Do you ever look at your mantle and think it is just simply too much clutter without any one thing really standing out or being the "focal point." Well, it's time to clear off that mantle and turn it into the clean focal point you've been wanting.

Instructions

Difficulty: Moderately Easy

Things You’ll Need:

  • Several different pieces of decoration
  • Candles
  • Focal point for your mantle (mirror or art work)
Step1
Start with the large focal point you'll be using directly over the center of your mantle. You'll need to decide based on your personal taste if it will be a decorative mirror or a favorite piece of art work.
Step2
Offset the focal point with a collection of items that bring height and depth to your mantel.
Step3
Don't worry about trying to "balance your mantle" on both sides of the center. You should try to add depth and height to your mantle with different heights of candles or vases with flower arrangements.
Step4
Use candles in odd number groups. Don't try to "pair candles." They show better in groups of 3, 5 or 7. Three is a good number for just about any mantle.

Tips & Warnings

  • Don't put too much clutter on your mantle. Instead of becoming an eye-pleasing focal point it will become messy eyesore.
  • Try not to place or display articles on your mantle that are too small. They will get lost on your mantle where "eye level" is not necessarily the norm.
