Warm Up on the Flute

Warming up is the most important part of practicing any instrument. It can help improve you playing as well as preventing any damage along the way.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Flute
  1. Step 1

    Long Tones!

Start on a low f and hold out the note as long as you can WHILE STILL PRODUCING A GOOD SOUND! Continue this going up by half steps.

Vary this each day by starting on a different note or going further then usual.

  2. Step 2

    Octave slurs!

Octave slurs are moving between the same notes in two different octaves without changing the fingering. Start on low f and play low f, high f, low f, high f, low f. Continue this up by half steps until you reach c#.

  3. Step 3

    Finger Exercises!

You want to do something that warms up your fingers now. This can be anything from scales and arpeggios to short little tunes to warm up your fingers.

Try to vary this every couple days to keep yourself interested

Tips & Warnings
  • Don't forget how important a warm up is, even if you only spend five minutes a day on it.
  • When warming up always start low and then move on to higher pitches!
