How to Engage in Creative Writing

Writing has never been an easy proposition, and we all receive inspiration uniquely. Based on this truth, I've found the following steps useful for me in the task of creative writing.

Difficulty: Moderate
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Notebook
  1. Step 1

Find the place of your inspiration. For some of us, it is the path that curves through the forest; for others, it is listening to a certain genre of music in complete isolation. Regardless of where it comes from, determine to spend as much time there as you can afford. Be practical. For example, if your greatest inspiration erupts while driving or walking, bring a voice recorder. Examine what you will be doing, and evaluate the best way to jot down the ideas that emerge. Never go to your "secret place" without a way to bring something back from it.

  2. Step 2

Rewrite your notes onto your computer or into another journal that you use for your writing projects. Learn to keep a good record of your discoveries.

  3. Step 3

Schedule some time during the week to work on your writing. It helps to engage in a routine. When it is time to write, go to your place of inspiration and open up either your notebook or laptop and write your story. Open your notes and spill your ideas onto the page. Begin to develop your thoughts, and watch them take shape.

  4. Step 4

Continue to maintain your time in your place of inspiration. If nothing more seems to be coming, then just retreat to writing in your journal. Keep visiting your "secret place," and never give up on meeting with your muse. More importantly, never give up on your writing. Statistically, 70 percent of those who start a novel never finish it. It is like they are saying, "I gave up my writing because my muse gave up on me." Never give up and keep writing.

on 9/12/2008 Good guide posts. Every writer needs to find his or her way, but many times a helpful hint is all that is needed for that little push. Good pushing David.

on 8/29/2008 Hi,

Thank you for the advice. I used to write down things that bothered me to get them of my chest never really thinking about writing down things that inspire me. This could be the start of something good.
