How to Assist a Dog in Giving Birth How to Assist a Dog in Giving Birth

Rate: (8 Ratings)

This article is about helping a dog in giving birth to puppies. Can be challenging but just go step by step with me because i love animals and will be future animal cruelty investigator.

Instructions

Difficulty: Challenging

Things You’ll Need:

  • bowl of hot water
  • warm water bottles
  • 3 wash cloths
  • large basket
  • plastic gloves
  • old sheets and blankets
  • vetinarian phone #'s
  • thermometer

Step1
First things first when you see that your dog is giving birth take your large basket and line the warm water bottles around the basket. Then take four or five old blankets and sheets and put them on top. (I would buy the blankets they give your for the real babies in the hospital, but a couple sheets will work). The reasoning for a basket is because once mama licks and cleans off the puppy you will want to place it in the basket so the puppies wont disturb mama giving birth.
Step2
If mama is having trouble cleaning off the puppies, then take your washcloths and dip them in the hot water and shake so it is not for the puppies and very gently with your gloves peel off the membrane that is around it but start with head because if the puppy is gonna have any chance of living it must breathe before anything.
Step3
If mama is having trouble giving birth or is yelping in pain contact the veterinarian. (A personal thing with me is if a dog can sense fear, its gonna sense your nervousness and the you be nervous is going to make the dog nervous.)
Step4
After mama is done with birth place all the puppies in front of her and give her some alone time with the puppies best thing to is get mama some water and food and keep a not far distance where she can still see the pups.
Step5
After a few weeks once they learn to walk around and start to explore buy all differently colored string and tie it around the pups leg and make sure the string is not hanging off otherwise the puppy will end up getting it off or choking on it or another puppy will come and play with it.

Tips & Warnings

  • Before birth happens you may want to make a record chart for mama. Take her temperature everyday and right it on the chart. Her temperature will decrease and u may want to keep record just in case a problem comes up he/she may want to see the temperature change. If mama' s temperature is above 103 degrees during birth contact a vet right away.
  • Keep children away for about 2-5 weeks unless mother allows.
  • make sure water for mama isn't too close otherwise the puppies get into it and drown.
