How to Decorate a Child’s Room in a Jungle Theme
Step1
Murals can feature animated or real animals, traced by opaque projector.
Jungle color palettes incorporate many natural hues, reminiscent of nature and the out-of-doors: browns, greys, tans, blacks, and greens. Using a half wall approach with paint on top, and a grassy type of wallpaper below—-separated by a molding fashioned from bamboo sticks—will give the impression of a native hut. Cut the bamboo vertically in half and attach to the wall on one, or more, walls.
Or, use a halfway marker created by stenciled paw-prints to separate the two. Think washable as much as possible—-or work with colors that won’t have to be cleaned weekly due to finger or hand marks.
If you choose a lighter upper wall color, consider stenciling jungle animals by using an opaque projector to trace the outlines, then fill in with details using shiny paints. If you are feeling particularly creative, cut out faux fur in the shapes of assorted animals, and attach that to the wall stencil outlines.
Other items can be used as accents or to center animal outlines, such as crossed spears, or spears used above and below the animals as an ersatz frame, or rubbery snakes in a type of framing. Palm fronds can be plugged in as accents, window coverings or work with wall art or other foliage.
Step2
Native huts provide decor inspiration with their grassy or thatched look.
Animals can also be stenciled on the closet doors—-and surrounded by tall tufts of faux grass or ferns, anchored near their feet, or made into tree forms. An entire mural of the various jungle fauna and flora can be traced/painted, and then sealed with a clear polyurethane finish after it dries.
Assorted grasses and branches, provided in nature’s own camouflage colors can fill corners or adorn the window as a type of canopy, or can be made into a thatching and hinged like an awning. Fine netting can also be made into curtains, and appear to be mosquito netting draped around the window.
Continue the canopy look over the bed with similar thatching, or use tulle to resemble mosquito netting, gathered into one large fold at the top of the bed, accented by a large tropical flower.
From a corner hook near a light source, hang a pith helmet (or some other type of jungle headgear) upside down, lining it with a waterproof container, and use for live or silk plants, some of which can trail down. Group with a brightly colored bird on a wooden perch to give the feel of a native scene, or let a monkey dangle by its tail or paw.
A natural fiber room rug can mimic natural grasses, or carpet/rugs in natural shades from the out-of-doors can cover the floor. Consider the type of covering used in miniature golf courses for “throw” rungs at the doorway or in front of closets with a hardy life to them.
Animal skins make great accent rugs, or can also be attached to the walls, as can mini animal heads that can be made to look like a hunter’s prizes.
Step3
Children's furniture frequently comes in themes; wicker adult pieces can replace that when kids age.
Accessorizing the room is limited only by the imagination.
Pre-made wicker furniture will increase the jungle mood, and items like lamps can be made to look very Hemingwayish by adding unique animal bases to natural fiber shades. Craft stores like Jo-Ann’s or retailers like Target carry this type of item as regular decorator pieces, and usually call it Asian or African influenced décor.
Don't forget the power of a Panama fan in the ceiling. too.
Army surplus stores carry olive drab items like canteens that could be drilled into lamp bases. Clearanced Army jackets can be sewed into throw pillows, or used as window accents.
A wastebasket can be painted or contact-papered to look like an elephant’s foot, or jungle drum. Trunks, baskets or antique suitcases can not only look like safari ware, but also make usable toy chests or be used for other storage.
Glow-in-the-dark stars on the ceiling give further evidence of an evening under the campfire, and can serve as a night-light for little ones.
Lighting can range from recessed spotlights aimed at key components in the room, colored light-bulbs in standard fixtures, or include hanging globes with more jungle ornamentation.
