How to Sew on a Budget

Sewing can be a wonderful hobby or career. It is therapeutic and allows you to be creative with your style and wardrobe. Sewing your own clothing, although seeming like a cheap alternative, can be expensive. Here are some tips to sew on a budget.

Instructions

Difficulty: Easy
Step1
Look at clearance racks. If you hit stores as they are changing fabrics for new seasons, you might get some great finds.
Step2
Snatch up leftover scraps of fabrics. Most often, stores sell these at a fraction of the original cost. If you are quilting or sewing a small stuffed animal or infant outfit, this is a great way to get fabric for cheap.
Step3
Consider purchasing fabric with imperfections. Rolls of fabric with imperfections are cheaper, and if you find a design that works around these imperfections, you can pick up some material for a great deal.
Step4
Look for sewing stores having sales or offering discount coupons. Stock up on needles, threads and patterns.
Step5
Find your fashion district. If you live in a big city, there is undoubtedly a fashion district with cheap fabrics. If you are willing to buy in bulk, you might be able to score some discounts.
Step6
Create a sewing circle or group. Offer to lend each other patterns or tools or give away extra fabric. By borrowing an item you know you’ll use only once, you can save the money you would have spent to buy it.
Step7
Make additions to premade items. If you love adding your own original style, pick up some pants or blazers at a secondhand store. By adjusting the hem, putting on new buttons or adding some patches, you will have an outfit that is completely original.
