Anyone can make a paper airplane, but it takes real ingenuity to make a paper helicopter that flies. Follow these simple directions and let your imagination soar.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Standard-sized sheet of printer paper
  • Scissors
  • Ruler
  • Pencil
  • Paper clip
  1. Step 1

Cut out a strip of paper measuring 10 inches by 1 1/2 inches.

  2. Step 2

Measure 5 1/4 inches from the bottom of the strip of paper, and draw a line that spans the width of the paper.

  3. Step 3

Measure 3/4 inch above this line and draw another line parallel to the first.

  4. Step 4

Find the center of the second line, which is 3/4 inch, and make a mark.

  5. Step 5

Draw a perpendicular line from the center mark all the way up to the edge of the paper.

  6. Step 6

Measure 1/2 inch from the edge of the paper on both sides of the first line and make a mark at each point.

  7. Step 7

Cut along the first line from the edge of the paper to the 1/2-inch mark on both sides of the paper.

  8. Step 8

Cut along the center line from the top edge of the paper all the way down to the second line.

  9. Step 9

Use the second line as your guide and fold one of the flaps at the top toward you and fold the other flap away from you. These thin strips of paper will serve as the rotor blades of your helicopter.

  10. Step 10

Use the cut marks on the first line as a guide, and fold both flaps inward, lengthwise, toward you.

  11. Step 11

Unfold the two flaps at the bottom, then starting from the very bottom of the strip of paper, fold about 1/4 inch of the paper upward. Keep rolling the paper up by repeating this step two more times.

  12. Step 12

Fold the side flaps in again. The bottom of the helicopter should be heavier and stiffer than the top. This is the tail of the helicopter.

  13. Step 13

Grasp the tail between the thumb and forefinger and throw the helicopter into the air. Try dropping the helicopter from a greater height for a longer flight.

Tips & Warnings
  • Attach a paper clip to the tail of the helicopter to make the rotor blades spin faster.
  • The longer the rotor blades, the slower the helicopter will fly.
  • If the rotor blades are too long or too short, the helicopter will tumble rather than fly.
