Things You'll Need:
- Photograph of a face
- Tracing paper
- Masking tape
- Sharp pencil
- Drawing paper
- Ruler
- Light box (optional)
-
Step 1
Find a photograph of the person you want to caricature. It should be large and clear, but it doesn’t matter whether it’s black and white or color.
-
Step 2
Tape a sheet of tracing paper over the picture.
-
Step 3
Trace the major outlines of the person’s features, including the shape of the hair and head. If you have a light box, place the two pieces of paper on the box. The backlighting will make the photograph easier to see through the tracing paper.
-
Step 4
Set the photograph aside and draw a grid on top of the pencil tracing. The squares in the grid can be any size, but try a 1-inch grid the first time. The grid should cover the entire drawing.
-
Step 5
Label the squares in the grid at the top and bottom, starting with number 1, until all the squares are numbered. Label the squares on the left and right with letters, starting with the letter A. Write the labels just outside the edge of the grid.
-
Step 6
Draw a second grid with the same number of squares on your drawing paper. This grid should be distorted, so make the width of the squares half as wide as the height. When you’re done, you should have a second grid with rectangular boxes. This grid should be drawn very light because you’re going to erase it later. Also, remember to label this grid the same way as the first grid.
-
Step 7
Look at the first grid and pick a square that has some lines from your pencil tracing. Look at where the lines are in that square. Check the labels to find the location for that square.
-
Step 8
Find the same rectangle on your drawing paper and draw the same lines into that box.
-
Step 9
Repeat steps 7 and 8 until you have transferred the original tracing to the drawing paper.
-
Step 10
Carefully erase the grid from the drawing paper. Add more detail, shading or color to the new drawing.
