Most yearbook advisers don't just advise, they actually teach the subject of producing a yearbook. Many people think that teaching yearbook is a cakewalk. Those of us who have actually taught it know better. The job is in addition to teaching whatever subject you normally teach and it involves a LOT of hours off the clock. Whether it is your first year teaching yearbook or your tenth, here are a few tips to keep you on track all year.

Instructions

Difficulty: Moderate

Step1
Teach students about business management. They need to learn how to work well with their peers in order to create a quality product. You will be teaching them time management, human relations and problem-solving techniques.
Step2
Get them selling right away. Teach them marketing skills early in the year. The sale of the yearbook begins the first day of school! They will learn how to advertise, how to do cold calls and how to interact with local businesses. Marketing is a top priority!
Step3
Start snapping photographs. All students should be familiar with the use of a camera and the basics of photography. It is a good idea to devote a good week to this subject as it is essential that all the students can choose between a good photograph and a bad one.
Step4
Write! Everyone must be proficient in the basic rules of journalism. I usually devote two weeks to the basics and then sprinkle lessons throughout the year here and there. It is a constant learning process and students need the backbone of journalism if they are going to create a quality yearbook.
Step5
Design sample pages. Teach the basics of layout and design to your students and continue having them design sample pages throughout the year. Save all work so that it may be used at a future date!
Step6
Relax! The task may seem daunting but there is plenty of help available. Pore over the Internet for helpful tips and don't forget to call your yearbook rep for help whenever you need it! That is what they get paid for!

Tips & Warnings

  • Bring the students treats. My students worked double time for me when I brought in cookies or candy.
