Manufactures do it all the time. It is a little known tip or fact that a new AA battery can power most devices and take the place of a C or even a D cell.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • AA batteries, rechargeable to save $
  • Paper or magazines
  • Scissors
  • Rubber bands
  • A device to power
  • Battery charger (optional)
  1. Step 1

The first step is to make sure that the AA battery or batteries that you are going to use are new or just charged. Rechargeable batteries would be good in this situation as the AA battery does not last as long as a normal C or D battery.

  2. Step 2

Cut long strips of a magazine and begin to wrap the battery. The paper should be the same length as the battery but should not cover the ends that will come in contact with the device.

  3. Step 3

Once you have built up enough layers to be the same width as a C or a D battery. Magazines work best because the paper is thicker and you will need to wrap less layers.

  4. Step 4

Finish the battery by surrounding the tube with one or two rubber bands to hold the paper in place. The battery should fit snug into the device that you are powering. Since AA, C, and D batteries are all the same length it should be a perfect fit. The rubber band will keep the battery from moving within the case once the door is put back on. This should power the device for a little less then the correct battery does.

Tips & Warnings
  • Charge batteries over night by placing them in the C or D cell slot of your charger. This way you don’t have to keep wrapping and unwrapping them.
  • Never use batteries that have burst. The acid inside can cause chemical burns on skin and eyes.
