How to Talk to a Jehovah's Witness If You Are a Christian

Many times people hear a knock at the door on a Saturday morning and try to decide whether or not they want to talk to the strangers outside, especially when they are Jehovah’s Witnesses. If you are tired of hiding behind the curtain and want to challenge yourself spiritually, open the door and let them in. Here are some ideas on what to do once you’ve opened the door to your house.

Difficulty: Moderately Challenging
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Your Bible
  • Time
  • A willingness to talk openly
  1. Step 1

Invite them to come inside, rather than making them stand on the doorstep.

  2. Step 2

Offer them a drink of some sort. Remember that they are outside walking and may be tired.

  3. Step 3

Listen to their concern for the environment or our children. Start the conversation there. If they are talking about how horrible the world is, feel free to agree with them. If they talk about the end times, tell them what you truly believe based on what you’ve read in the Bible.

  4. Step 4

Make sure you know what you believe first. The Jehovah’s Witnesses have probably read portions of the Bible or know some key Bible verses and have been taught what to believe. Many of them may not have actually read the Bible for themselves or have done any research on history and what to believe outside of their church.

  5. Step 5

Welcome them to share their beliefs. Ask them how they believe we get to heaven. Ask who Jesus Christ is to them. Ask what they believe is the cause for all of the problems in the world. Ask if they believe there is only one right church. Encourage conversation, and tell them what you believe if they are interested.

  6. Step 6

Don't be afraid to look up Bible verses together, just make sure you use your own Bible. The key is to listen to what they say and respond in a genuine manner. If you know the Bible and what you believe, then they will be able to say things and you’ll know if they are in error or not. Some of their beliefs are similar to the Christian teachings. However, the differences will usually be in the topics of: Who can go to heaven? Who is Jesus Christ? Is he God’s only son who came to die on the cross for our sins? Can we earn our way to heaven or is it purely a gift from God?

  7. Step 7

Offer them the thought that there is no such thing as one right church. People are human and will make mistakes and errors in judgment. Explain to them that it’s our duty to read the Bible for ourselves and figure out what we believe, apart from what the pastors and teachers at the church say. Encourage them to compare their church doctrine to the scripture to make sure it lines up. If it doesn’t, tell them they should have the option of changing churches. If this is not an option for them, they should examine the reasons for this. Thank them for coming and invite them to try your church.

on 11/8/2009 Rather than basicly waisting your time and their time just say politely, "thank you for coming, I am not interested in what you have to say." Really from the information in the article it basicly sounds like you want to change them. Obviously, you truly are not interested in what they have to say and really you probably are not going to change their mind either. So why not do the Christian thing and honestly say you are not interested?

on 9/21/2009 Let me guess what you do 10 hours a month?? Punch a card so WT can check up on you? Take your hat off during the national anthem? Nope. Vote in elections? Nope. Have a "bad association" with someone and get raped? It's partly your fault.

OK..I'm sorry. These people are NOT coming in my house. You live in a country where you are permitted to practice your cult..er...religion yet you won't do the pledge? You don't even have the common courtesy to remove your HATE during the national anthem? Let me guess...is there PAGEN crap behind that, too?

Hey...how about 1914??? That must've been an invisible second coming, huh??? How about that Gerber guy??? How about those High School grads that translated your Bible that didn't even know the original language???? NIIIICCEEEEE.

There is ONE WAY to heaven....believing in Christ as your savior John 3:16. Of course, THEIR translation...
