Tall boots are very expensive, and a bad thing to buy and then find out they do not properly fit. Unfortunately, tall boots are one of the mistakes many make when first buying hunt attire. Custom boots are always the best way to go but can be very pricey.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Friend for an opinion and assistance
  1. Step 1

Find a store that has a large variety of tall boots where you can go and try them on for fit, make and size.

  2. Step 2

Have a qualified sales assistant help you in trying the different boots. These individuals should know the different makes and how they fit. They should also measure your foot, calf width and length.

  3. Step 3

Try on every different style that they bring to you. Tall boots with zipper backs are much easier and are now acceptable in the show ring. Pull-on boots should be a little difficult to slip on, especially through the foot and ankle. Sit down, stand up, wiggle your foot and try all you can to put the new stiff boots on your foot.

  4. Step 4

Look at how the boots fit once they are on your foot. The foot part of the boot should fit like a typical shoe. The ankle should have give and allow you to freely move your foot and ankle. The calf should be snug with not too much give. If there is too much material around the calf, this can result in rubs and sores.

  5. Step 5

Check the height of boots. When boots are new they are going to set higher than you want but that is because the ankle is not broken down from wear. The back of the boot should come a little above the bend of your knee. The side of the boot should come past the bend of the knee by a fair amount, and the entire top of the boot should be snug around the top of your calf.

Tips & Warnings
  • Use your friends opinion and the help of the store clerk to help you make the tough decisions.
  • Dress boots are for the Dressage arena and field boots are for the Hunter/Jumper ring.
  • If the boots are too tight or cause pain, do not buy them. Do not mistake new boot discomfort for actual pain.
