When your children are old enough to help around the house, sometimes it’s fun to play a game of make-believe.

From Quick Guide: Household Chores
Difficulty: Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Imagination (not optional)
  • Paper and pens
  • Cleaning supplies
  1. Step 1

Set a time limit. For example, say that the work has to be done in 3 hours, but allow the children to take their time within that time-frame.

  2. Step 2

Help them create an imaginary setting. For example, pretend they are housekeepers in a hotel or castle. Give them aprons to wear and rubber gloves. Make little hats and nametags. Give them mints to put on the pillows and “tips” when they are done. The tips can be candy, notes, or money.

  3. Step 3

Tell them which rooms they are supposed to clean up. Pretend you are the “boss” at the hotel or the “lord” of the castle. If they aren’t working, tell them they will be fired and won’t be able to earn a reward. In fact, tell them they may be put in the “dungeon,” which has no TV, computer or phones.

  4. Step 4

Hand them a checklist of what needs to be done in each room so they know when they are done. Have them hang a sign on the door when it’s clean, so the imaginary people know when they can return.

  5. Step 5

Hand them a paycheck or “tip” when they’ve completed the task. If they are inside the castle, invite them to a ballroom dance after work. Then turn on the music, let them dress up and dance. You could even break out the fake champagne and crackers and cheese.
